Cord blood stem cells
Umbilical cord blood stem cells (or haematopoietic cells) have two distinct advantages over stem cells collected from bone marrow.
The first is to do with numbers. Cord blood has a much higher concentration of stem cells than bone marrow, per volume. And finding a perfect or ideal match with bone marrow could be problematic.
The second is to do with comfort, or lack of it. Extracting stem cells from bone marrow is a painful experience for the donor. Collecting cord blood stem cells, however, is painless, non-invasive, and simple. And the match to the donor of their own cells is 100%. And significantly probable for the rest of the family.
