Professor Dominique Charron, MD, PhD
Professor Dominique Charron, MD, PhD, is currently Professor of Immunology, Head of Transplantation Biology and Translational Research at Hôpital St Louis in Paris, a leading hospital associated with the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the HLA system, in 1980 and the first cord blood transplantation in 1988.His research interests are Immunogenetics, transplantation biology and medicine as well as publishing over 400 international scientific papers in basic and translational medical science.
Professor Judith Hoyland
I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Medical Sciences from Bradford University in 1985 and was awarded a PhD from the University of Manchester in 1988 for research into disc degeneration and nerve root compression as a cause of low back pain. From this work arose papers describing the absence of classical inflammation when there was intervertebral disc prolapse, but highlighting a role for ischaemia and fibrosis resulting from local blood vessel compression. After gaining my PhD in 1988 I was then involved in developing new molecular techniques (in situ hybridisation and in situ PCR) that could be applied to tissues, predominantly bone and cartilage to investigate gene expression. Subsequently I was appointed lecturer in Molecular Pathology, senior lecturer in 1998 and Professor in 2007.
My past research has focused on the development of modern molecular technologies for application to the pathological study of disease mechanisms in human "hard" tissues (cartilage, bone etc.). Currently my research group is applying these techniques to obtain novel insights into:
- The cell biology of normal and diseased intervertebral discs; and
- Adult mesenchymal stem cell differentiation and its regulation.
Lady Roche (Ethicist)
Lady Roche is currently a member of the Ethics Committee at the Charing Cross Hospital. She has served as Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Cromwell Hospital and has also been a member of the Ethics Committee at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital 1995-2005.
Professor Paul Whiting (Chemical Pathology and Clinical Biochemistry)
Professor Whiting is currently responsible for the teaching of Chemical Pathology and Clinical Biochemistry to Biomedical Science students, and also for the subject area ‘Clinical Investigations’. He also teaches transplantation immunology to final year BMS students and acts as a placement supervisor for those students undertaking the HPC port folio training leading towards state registration as a Biomedical Scientist. His research interests include: kidney toxicology; the immunobiology of immunosuppressive agents and biochemical correlates of early tissue damage.
Dr Athanasios Zomas (Consultant Haematologist)
Dr Athanasios Zomas is a Consultant Haematologist at the Attikon University Hospital of Athens. His career has taken him to the United Kingdom where he has served in several senior positions within the Haematology Departments at the Royal Marsden Hospital and St George’s Hospital Tooting London.
Dr Dimitrios Papatheodorou (Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist)
Dr Dimitrios Papatheodorou is a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His PhD research was on insulin resistance during normal pregnancy and its effects on foetal programming. He is the co-author of various articles and book chapters focusing on the endocrinology of pregnancy. He was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer at the University Medical School of Nottingham in 2007. Currently he is a Subspecialist Clinical Fellow in Gynaecological Oncology at Royal Surrey County Hospital.
Dr Sarah Jarvis (General Practitioner & Media Doctor)
Dr Sarah Jarvis trained at Cambridge and Oxford, and is a 3/4 time GP and GP trainer in an inner city practice. She has a particular interest in women’s health and pregnancy issues. Sarah entered the world of medical media by accident through work with the Royal College of GPs, for whom she is a spokesperson on women’s health, and now writes and broadcasts on consumer health matters. She has authored a number of books, including Pregnancy for Dummies, Children’s Health for Dummies and A Younger Woman’s Diagnose-It-Yourself Guide to Health, and is a regular contributor to publications such as Good Housekeeping, Women’s Health, Pregnancy and Baby & You. She is currently the BBC Radio 2 doctor. She also appears regularly on GMTV, ITN lunchtime news and Radio 5 Live.
Maria Giuditta Valorani, BSc (Scientist)
Dr Maria Giuditta Valorani is currently a scientist at the Institute of Cell and Molecular Science, Department Diabetes & Metabolic Medicine, Queen Mary University of London. She is a Research Biologist with extensive research experience in the fields of Stem Cells, Haematology, Molecular Biology and Cytogenetics.
Tracy Thomas (Midwifery Advisor)
I have worked in Health Care since 1989 in a variety of roles supporting women and families. I began my midwifery career in 1999.After a limited period in the NHS I chose to work independently so I could practice midwifery to the fullest extent, ensuring clients were supported in individual choices, and remained in control of their birthing experiences. In 2007 I facilitated the setting up and running of a private birth centre so that low risk healthy women had the choice to birth outside of the hospital in a midwifery led facility. I continue in the role of Head of midwifery at the birth centre, alongside my commitment to FHT as the midwife advisor. I am passionate about sharing information so that families can make informed choices. I have personal interests in stem cell collection and storage as I have firsthand experience within my close family of how this amazing procedure can make a difference to the quality of a person's life.
