The UK's first and oldest MHRA Accredited and HTA Licensed Private Stem Cell Bank
Future Health received formal accreditation from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) of the UK Department of Health in 2004.
We are the first and oldest private cord blood stem cell bank in the UK to collect, process and store stem cells with this accreditation. The objective of the UK Department of Health Code of Practice for Tissue Banks is to make sure that tissue of reliable quality is produced for supply to the health service for therapeutic purposes. It is the "Gold Standard" for stem cell bank operations.
The accreditation also means that we adhere to the Guidance on the Microbiological Safety of Human Organs, Tissues and Cells used in Transplantation as well as the current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) guidelines. Future Health registered under the Code of Practice in 2003 and our certificate number 0083/00/00/0-04 was issued on December 8th, 2004. The certificate was renewed for a further 2 years following our most recent inspection on March 2006.
We are the first private family cord blood stem cell bank to have received this accreditation from the UK MHRA. (click here for List of MHRA accredited banks).
On the 1st of September, 2006 we were also the first to receive a full Human Tissue Authority (HTA) licence, reference number 11058. The HTA licence was renewed in November 2008 for a further 3 years (reference number 22503).
The HTA has now become the Competent Authority in the UK under the new EU Tissues and Cells Directives (EUTCD information) (March 2004, February 2006, October 2006) with responsibility for licensing the storage of human tissue. The main focus of licensing and inspection of banks holding cord blood stem cells for transplantation will therefore be compliance with the safety and quality protocols that form part of the EUTCD which has already become law. See The Human Tissue (Quality and Safety for Human Application) Regulations 2007.
Anyone storing human tissue and cells for therapeutic use must now be in possession of a license from the HTA. (click here for a list of HTA licensed banks).
